5 years ago, I was driving from Ventura to Carpinteria along the Pacific Coast Highway checking for surf and spotted this VW T3 Westfalia. At the stage in my life, I was spending most of my time lurking up and down the coast of California, surfing by day, stealth camping by night and amassing a near encyclopedic knowledge of hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurants from LA to San Francisco. As a van dweller, I was always on the lookout for other people living in their vans, and this person’s van/drying rack caught my eye. I snapped a few frames of my Mamiya 6, and went on my way. When it came time to lay out Home Is Where You Park It with @victoryjournal, I knew I wanted to use this image for the cover. It conveys so much of what I loved about my time spent living in my van; self reliance, the sense of freedom and discovery of having your own escape pod, and the accessibility of reconnecting with nature (in this case the ocean) on the relative cheap. Every time I look at this photo, it takes me back. Not just the things that I learned about myself, but the very small glimpse that I got into the wider world, ultimately realizing how little I actually know. And how exciting and humbling that really is . Which got me thinking over the last few months how to use this platform for more than just us, more than just the casual update on what our life is at the moment, or picture of Roscoe (even though honestly yes, I’d love to have an account just for Roscoe pics). Instead, I’d like to turn this account into a story-telling platform to give back to all of you, to create kind of a periodical for those slices from your personal experiences, which don’t necessarily have to be in a van . If you’d like to contribute, I’ll be posting one story weekly on Fridays (both on the blog and on Instagram), focused on ways that your lifestyle has changed your habits or your perspective on something specific. Is there enough room to change and grow together here? Every one of our hopes and dreams, each of our fears and hang ups are stuffed inside this little orange house of ours. We carry them with us as we cross state lines and forest service barriers. Some days are mountain-high. We swim in quiet rivers and don’t talk all afternoon and we understand each other so well I wonder if we’ll ever need to use words again. Other days, we argue about work or money or some other small matter that seems enormous at the time and finally, after an hour or two at it, you grab the tent out of the cabinet up front and stake it in the dirt outside the bus and you sleep in it, even though it’s chilly outside and your ground pad has a hole in it. “Leave me alone, Kit,” you say. I hear your sighs through the canvas on nights like that and I wonder how any of this will work. – But then we get up the next morning, the same sun in the sky, the same drawers in our cabinets, a raven calling from a cliff ledge, and I realize we’re still the same old “Us.” You put the tent away and I heat up water for coffee and we sheepishly tell each other we’re sorry in our own coy ways—though when it’s your turn, you belch right in the middle of your sentence and I can’t hold it in anymore and together we laugh. The steam and tension billow from our mouths like the geysers in Yellowstone. We relax, then, if only a little. Things aren’t perfect. We haven’t quite forgiven each other. I don’t know if you’ll pull that tent out again tonight. But we’re here, we’re trying, and, today at least, we can laugh about it. Sitting here, it’s my guess that when two people are attempting to share one existence, that’s about all you can ask. That they try. – 📷: @arianeski
